What does it mean to be a woman in western cultural circles? One aspect of mainstream thought is that a woman should present herself as favourably as possible. Attractive, perhaps seductive, presenting her best features in an advantageous light by means of the subtle use of make-up, for example, or by alluring clothes. She wants to exert appeal, to be at least pretty, if not beautiful in the sense of the female ideal.
